What Files Do You Need to Create a macOS Virtual Machine on Windows 10?
Before delving into the «how-to,» you need to download and install the essential tools. The tutorial details how to create macOS virtual machines using both Oracle VirtualBox Manager (VirtualBox) and VMware Workstation Player (VMware Player).
- Download the latest version of VirtualBox. This tutorial uses VirtualBox 6.1.22
- . This tutorial uses VMware Player 16
You need a copy of macOS, too. Big Sur is the latest macOS version. You can find the download links for macOS Big Sur in the next section.
This tutorial will focus on installing macOS Big Sur in a virtual machine running on Intel hardware, using either VirtualBox or VMware Player.
Unfortunately, I do not have access to any AMD hardware, so I cannot provide a tutorial.
There is, however, the code snippet that anyone using an AMD system requires to boot a macOS Big Sur using VMware on AMD hardware.
Launching the macOS Big Sur virtual machine is the same as the Intel version but uses a slightly different code snippet. You can find the tutorial and the code snippet in the section below.
Furthermore, you will find links to several AMD macOS Catalina, Mojave, and High Sierra virtual machine tutorials, at the end of the article.
Conclusion
MacOS can be installed on a VMware VM running on ESXi. This can be done after the preparation of a bootable installation image of the ISO format with hdiutil, applying a free patch on an ESXi server and configuring certain VM settings. It is not recommended to install the macOS unlocker patch on ESXi servers that are used in production environments, in order to minimize the probability of any possible issues or negative impacts on production VMs. In this blog post, we have covered the installation of macOS Sierra due to its high popularity among users; however, you can also use the explained logics for installing macOS High Sierra and macOS Mojave on VMware VMs running on ESXi.

BIOS/UEFI
Secure Boot Mode.
CFG-Lock.
- В опции OS Type поставьте Other OS.
- Выключите IO SrialPort.
XHCI Handoff.
Apple.
OS X Yosemite
Visualization and M1 Macs
There are millions of Intel-based Macs still in use all around the world that can still use either Boot Camp or virtualisation to run Windows. However, in 2020 Apple announced that it would be moving away from using Intel processors to its own Apple Silicon processors and this transition began with the arrival of the ARM-based M1 Chip in November 2020. Rather than the x86 architecture used by Intel processors, the Apple’s M1 processors use a different architecture, known as ARM (named after Arm Ltd, the British company that originally designed the chips).
This means that new Macs that are based on the M1 chip — or any of its future variants, such as the rumoured M1X — no long offer Boot Camp because the M1 processor is not compatible with the with the x86 version of Windows. Virtualisation is also more complicated, as Apple’s ARM chips can’t easily create virtual machines that mimic Intel’s x86 chips.
However, Microsoft is currently developing a new version of Windows that is also designed to run on ARM chips, generally referred to as Windows On ARM. The recently released Parallels Desktop 17 does allow M1 Macs to create virtual machines that run Windows On ARM, although it’s a tricky process as this new version of Windows is still in development and is only available to people who have registered for Microsoft’s Insider testing program.
Further complicating matters, Microsoft announced that Windows 11 will arrive later on 6 October 2021. While there will apparently be an ARM version of Windows 11 (eventually) it is still possible that it will not run on Macs whether they have an Intel or an Apple processor. This is because Microsoft requires a security chip called the TPM module — and Macs don’t have this chip. Read: Will Windows 11 run on Mac? for more information. Also read: Windows 11 vs macOS and what Apple should copy.
To cut a long story short, the bottom line is that it’s business as usual for Intel Macs, as those Mac models can still use either Boot Camp or virtualisation technology in order to run Windows. However newer M1 Macs can only use virtualisation to run Windows, and even then you have to jump through a few hoops in order to obtain the new version of Windows On ARM. Steps to Download and Use macOS 11.0 Big Sur VMware Preinstalled VMware image
Here is the quick recap of the steps we will be doing to install macOS 11.0 Big Sur on Windows OS by pre-installed VMware VMDK file.
- Download the Sysprobs pre-installed VMware image and extract it.
- Keep your VMware workstation or player updated.
- Unlock the VMware
- Import the VMware VMX file from the extracted location and use the macOS 11.0 virtual machine. Enjoy!
Detailed Steps
1) Download the pre-installed VMware image below. It is a torrent file, properly created by me. Please allow seeding for some time after downloading. It is around 17GB in 7z format.
This file contains the Big Sur VMDK disk file and configuration file.
Download VMware Image
2) Extract the pre-installed image by using 7-Zip or Win RAR. The output will be will around 23GB. This VM is configured for 100GB disk space. So, make sure you have enough free space at the place where you are extracting.
3) Make sure you have the latest VMware workstation or player.
4) Unlock VMware workstation to support macOS as guest OS.
This is a critical step to complete. Apple doesn’t support to virtualize their OS on non-Apple hardware (but it can be done on Apple devices). Using this unlocker, we are making the VMware workstation support macOS VM.
Download the latest version of Unlocker from the developer page here.
Read our guide about how to use the VMware unlocker on Windows 10.
The successful unlock shall give you the below option when you try to create a new VM. This is just for confirmation only. Do not create any new VM in this case.
5) Now open the VMX file from the extracted location. This will open the virtual machine settings.
6) Here you can customize the hardware settings based on the power of your physical computer. If you can assign more processor cores and RAM, it will boost the performance of VM dramatically. I’m satisfied with my 4GB and 4 core processor.
7) Power of the VM now.
You may get the below message since this VM is made from other computer location. Click on the “I Copied It” option.
8) The macOS 11.0 Big Sur VM will ask for a password to log in. This preinstalled image has the account name “Sysprobs” and the password is “sysprobs123”.
9) You must land on the desktop without any issues.
10) I highly recommend taking a snapshot before proceeding to any additional steps.
This OS build is installed from the vanilla kernel on a new virtual machine. It is not upgraded or overwritten from any other older Operating Systems. Hence, this can be upgraded to future releases from the App Store without any modification or tweaks.
Additional Setup and Cross Check
Few things you can customize to make this VM useful.
a) Network
The network worked out of the box. By default, it was configured in NAT mode. If you have the Internet access on the host computer, the VM is going to get the connection inside the guest virtual machine.
If you need to transfer data between macOS 11 Big Sur VM and Windows 10 host, setting up VMware shared folder is the ideal way. Instead of creating network shares or enabling clipboard sharing, this method can be smoothly done for effective data transfer.
- Make sure that the latest VMware tools are installed on the macOS guest VM.
- Decide (or create) the folder on the host computer (Windows 10) that you want to share to Big Sur macOS.
- Go to virtual machine settings and enable Shared folders under ‘Options’. Select ‘Always enabled’ option.
- Reboot the virtual machine to take effect. Or you could complete the earlier settings while the virtual machine is switched off.
- That should mount and show the additional shared disk under Computer in macOS.
If you haven’t enabled ‘Read Only’ access while settings up this shared folder, you should be able to read and type on the Windows 10 share which is working through VMware shared folder feature.
Wrap Up
I hope this guide and the VMware Pre-installed image of macOS 11.0 Big Sur is useful to test and play around with the latest OS from Apple.
This method is only for testing and learning purpose. Though the performance of the virtual machine is not that bad on Windows 10 computer as guest VM, it is highly recommended to use the Apple hardware for their OS to get maximum advantages.
As the Big Sur is in beta stage at the moment, I will be updating this post and VMDK file once the final public version is available. But as I mentioned earlier, this build can be upgraded to any release from Apple. Hence you are free to upgrade to the latest beta or final versions after taking a snapshot.
If you think this post is useful, please share and leave your comments about the issues and success notes you faced with the installation and also about the performance of this VM on your Windows hardware.

Done! macOS 10.14 Mojave Final on VMware on Windows PC
macOS Mojave Final on VMware on Windows PC
With VMware, it is possible to run Mac on Windows PC. This the best free virtualization software out there. With it, You can run a Mac on the same PC hosting the Windows operating system. This is the solution for people who cannot choose any among the two best operating systems! You can now have both Windows and macOS on one computer. You never have to choose one.
macOS Big Sur management updates
We ran down the Mac management updates after WWDC this summer (see here and here),but here’s a quick overview of the changes that customers will see as they update their Mac fleets to Big Sur.
App lifecycle management
Apple announced at WWDC that macOS is gainingproper app lifecycle management. These capabilities allow admins to manage the app removal in addition to the app install. While there are specific requirements to manage macOS apps, it still brings better control to macOS for Mac Administrators (a long-requested feature). From a Workspace ONE perspective, we’re excited to bring features for store-based app lifecycle management and the ability to expand the volume of apps available to help end users be productive anywhere.
Supervision for User-Approved MDM
Big Sur brings a change for devices enrolled via User-Approved MDM (UAMDM) by classifying them as supervised. We’re excited because supervisionprovides the underlying permissions for Workspace ONE administrators to manage software updates via MDM.It also enables activation lock bypass, enhanced Mac user management and, of course, the use of supervised restrictions.
Kernel Extensions Impacted
Kernel Extensions will run with Big Sur, but only after rebooting the device with a select command to rebuild the Kernel Cache. Admins should avoid Kernel Extensions and the less-than-ideal user experience resulting from their usage. Instead, opt for software that uses System Extensions and use the (up-to) 90-day window to test apps using System Extensions to ensure continued compatibility and great user experiences.
Kerberos SSO Extension
We can now enable the Kerberos SSO extension while users are off-network using per-app tunneling. Per-app tunneling for the SSO extension means that users can be outside the enterprise network, get Kerberos tickets for SSO and manage their Active Directory password.
Add macOS image
After creating the virtual machine, we have a virtual disk to install macOS Mojave. Now we just need to add a new virtual disk containing the macOS installer. You can also create a macOS bootable USB, then boot USB in VMware Workstation to install but using a virtual hard disk will be a lot simpler.
- Download the OSX_10.14.0_Installer.vmdk file. This is an installation image of macOS Mojave. You do not need to use the Hackintosh ISO.
- Select the virtual machine just created, click on Edit virtual machine settings.
- In the Memory section, you can increase the value to make the virtual machine run faster. I increased it to 4096MB (4GB) but macOS still runs very slowly.
- Click Add…, then select Hard Disk and click Next.
- In the Select a Disk Type window, click Next.
- Select Use an existing virtual disk in the Select a Disk window and click Next to continue.
- In the Select an Existing Disk window, click Browse… to select the OSX_10.14.0_Installer.vmdk file that you downloaded in step 1.
- Click Finish, then click OK in the Virtual Machine Settings window.
The possibilities from Apple Silicon M1 Macs
M1-based Macs will be more potent than their predecessors, due in part to those eight cores we mentioned above.Four of theeight cores are “efficiency cores” that handle light chores, and the other four are“high-performance cores” that deal with heavier workloads. This mix of core types translates into a higher-performance chip than its competitors, that also consumes less power. So overall, the M1 architecture is primed to improveproductivity judging by the benchmarks and the near-instant wake from sleep. On top of that, the reduced power consumption delivers benefits like longer battery life, cooler operating temperatures, reduced impact on the power grid and negligible ambient noise generated by the device’s fans.
With the M1 chip driving improvements in Big Sur, developers can now create “Universal Apps,” or apps that run on all of Apple’s platforms, including iOS,iPadOS and macOS.This dual capability could help streamline enterprise app development, allowing code once and deploy anywhere.Users gain access to the apps they need, regardless of the platform at their fingertips.
Additionally, M1’s neural engine bringsmachine learning and AI capabilities to macOS native apps (as well as iOS apps running on macOS).We expect this will allow huge improvements to enterprise apps running on macOS, and for our part, we’re also looking at ways to leverage these new device-side capabilities for Workspace ONE.

smc.version = «0»
Patching ESXi to Customize the Host for Running MacOS
The patch is needed to unlock Mac OS X in the list of available operating systems in the VM options during the creation of a VM. Virtual machines with Mac OS X are not supported by default. The patch unlocks the Mac OS X operating system family in the new VM options on ESXi, and includes VMware Tools for macOS.
Downloading a patch
The patch is free and can be downloaded from this page. MacOS Unlocker 2.0.8 is used in this example due to ESXi support. The newest version of macOS unlocker is version 3.0.2. Unlocker 2 supports both VMware ESXi and VMware Workstation, while Unlocker 3 only supports VMware Workstation (including the latest versions of VMware Workstation). Version 2.0.8 is the latest version of the patch with ESXi support.
Transferring patch files to ESXi datastore
After downloading the patch, copy the patch files to the datastore on ESXi. You can use WinSCP, which supports the transfer of files over SSH by using SFTP, SCP, WebDAV, or S3 protocols (in Linux you can use the equivalent software). WinSCP has a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI), and consists of two main panels. Copy the unlocker files from your local directory to your datastore on the ESXi server. In this example the unlocker patch and the macOS Sierra installation ISO image (Sierra.iso) were created beforehand, and are placed in C:\Virtual\images_MacOS for convenience. The patch is copied to /vmfs/volumes/datastore1 on the ESXi server. Sierra.iso would be copied to the datastore40. Later, you can mount the ISO image from the datastore to the virtual DVD drive of the virtual machine.
Applying a patch
After copying the macOS unlocker patch to the ESXi server, you should add the permissions for the executable files in order to be able to apply the patch. Go to the directory where the patch is placed (if you use a different directory, type the name of your directory) by typing cd
/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/patch_unlocker208/
Make the patch installer and the patch uninstaller files executable:
chmod +x esxi-install.sh
chmod +x esxi-uninstall.sh
Type ls -al to check the files and their permissions in the current directory.
Run the macOS unlocker patch:
./esxi-install.sh
After successful patching, restart the ESXi server with the reboot command.
